Two photos received equal votes from the majority of our judges. While both of the are extraordinary on their own, they are exceptionally wonderful when seen together. Therefore, this year's first prize is awarded jointly to William Reyland for the two photos below.

When we asked the photographer to tell us something about these photos he said:

"These photos are two of a over a thousand exposures I took while living in Wat Ban La Kai. I lived there as a teacher and then as a monk for a year in 2004/05. I originally come from the states but now consider Thailand my home. One day while walking around the grounds I saw these novice children playing on the dock. I basically ran as fast as I could back to my kuti and grabbed my camera because I knew it would be a great photo, especially if I could shoot a few without them noticing me. These kids were my students and I have to say living and getting to know them gave me some great photo opportunities, above all, though, the chance to learn and grow within such a great (although frustrating at times) culture. Wat Ban La Kai, also known as Wat Pramuenrat is located in Isan. The camera is a Nikon F1 SLR 35 mm."
