All Quiet on the Eastern Front

We are all pretty thankful that Southeast Asia remains both peaceful and safe. During the past four months no airplanes have fallen from the sky and there has not been a single incident of politically-motivated violence in any of the beautiful places where we care for our guests. Bangkok nightlife is back to normal (whatever that is). Sunny beaches, incredible food, incomparable shopping and some of the friendliest people on the planet await you. Best of all, Southeast Asia is still an astounding bargain. If you have not visited us for a while, there could not be a better time than now.

Kudos to Us!

Metro Magazine, the glossy English-language monthly lifestyle mag read throughout Thailand, has awarded Purple Dragon "best specialty tour company of the year." That's a pretty big deal around here. Four runners up include the Siam Society and Asia Tours--stiff competition indeed. Why us? We can only guess. Maybe because of our innovative products, our high standard of service and our involvement in the community.

Plenty of Pride

2001 was a year of milestones for Thailand's pride events. In Bangkok, the third annual celebration grew to include a series of sports activities and "Pink in the Park," a daytime festival that included a mini-parade (above left), volleyball championship play-offs, entertainment, stalls sponsored by local businesses and community groups, swimming and plenty of food. Pattaya held its very first Gay Festival. Guessing from the photo above, the daytime parade attracted throngs of attractive onlookers. Organizers gave local charities 3,240,000 baht (almost $75,000) from proceeds of parties and events leading up to the parade. [MORE]

Phuket's annual Gay Festival is only a few weeks away. Although many hotels are already sold out we, have a few rooms set aside for our friends who are feeling spontaneous. If you would like to experience pride in an island paradise, visit www.purpledrag.com/pgf.htm. For a schedule of Phuket Gay Festival events, go to www.purpledrag.com/gfests.htm

Feeling Adventurous?

Some of our friends enjoy traveling in a group of like-minded gay men. Toto Tours, one of the most popular soft adventure organizers in the USA, has tapped Purple Dragon to be its exclusive ground operator in Thailand and Cambodia. Plan now to join their November 9th "Exotic Kingdoms" group tour of Bangkok, Kanchanburi, Krabi and Angkor Wat. Highlights of the holiday include river rafting, sea canoeing, cultural highlights, and a private river cruise aboard an antique rice barge to celebrate Loy Kratong, the Thai festival of lights. Photo of the Month

We could not help showing you our annual group portrait just one more time. This is the third year in a row we have done something silly to show you what kind of guys we really are. Many customers who receive copies by snail mail around the first of each year have kept them all. While they will probably never be as valuable as a Hank Aaron trading card, they are certainly collectable and a lot more fun than Hello Kitty stickers. Click on the photo for a closer look.

The new VIP Lounge on our website will include a gallery of amazing photographs from our part of the world. If you have a really exceptional photo to share with our friends, please send it to info@purpledrag.com. Members will have free access to our library of "before you go" information as well as members-only privileges, like contests and occasional special bargains. Carpenters and decorators are working overtime so the lounge can open soon. However, you can get a free pass today. Just sign up on our website.

Tour of the Month

You may not have heard of Krabi before, but Thai have long preferred this sleepy seaside resort to the well-known tourist destinations of Phuket, Samui and Phi Phi. With its new airport and improved infrastructure, Krabi is now attracting sun-seekers and adventurers who can easily access Thailand's most spectacular beaches and dozens of nearby fairytale islands dotting the Andaman Sea. Sleepy Ao Nang beach, bustling Raileh beach, and dramatic Ao Phra Nang beach are three favorites. Diving, snorkling, caving, mountain climbing, and sea canoeing are popular activities. Please see http://www.purpledrag.com/uislands.htm for two new packages: Krabi Adventure and Krabi Sea Breeze.
